Lion finds bomb in Belgian zoo

February 13, 2008 By: Bolkie Category: animals, funny, odd, weird No Comments →

In the small zoo in the Belgian town Olmen-Balen, the Olmense Zoo, a lion dug up an explosive this Monday. Simba the lion found the grenade in a pile of sand, dumped on the terrain earlier by construction workers. The sand was supposed to be used in the construction of new animal housing right across the lion’s cage.

During the afternoon, the zoo owner noticed Simba showing unusual interest at an object in the pile of sand. ” When I took a closer look, I saw a grenade was sticking out. We had to get the lions out of the cage first, then we were able to safely take out the grenade. At the moment a large steel fence is placed around the dangerous spot.”

Interesting note: a couple years ago, the zoo was also in the news when a grenade was found inside.

 jail cell

Ansar Burney, Pakistan’s Human Rights Minister, announced that he has discovered an Indian spy, who is jailed in Pakistan for over 35 years. Apparently they had forgotten all about him. Kashmir Singh was arrested for espionage in 1973 and received the dead penalty for his actions. The penalty was never carried out. Since then Singh, a father of three, has been locked up in his ‘death row’ cell for at least 23.5 hours a day. All this time he did not even get one visitor, but he was allowed to stretch his legs 30 minutes a day.

The Pakistani Minister told that he was able to track down the unfortunate man after being tipped off by the Indian community in London. President Musharraf has expressed his ’shock and disbelief’ after he found out about the situation. He also told that mister Singh will be released from jail very soon.

At this moment mister Kashmir Singh is said to be ‘mentally ill’ and effort are being made to track down his family in India.

Since Pakistan and India became independent countries in 1947 they have fought three wars together. Careful peace negotiations were started in 2004. Recently they even carried out a prisoner swap. The prisoners were mostly fishermen, who had strayed into ‘enemy’ territorial waters and were detained.

How about tax-deductible bribes ?

Bribe The Tel Aviv District Court has ruled, in a precedent setting decision, that bribes amounting to $860,000 paid to government officials in a foreign country to promote a deal will not be considered an expense recognized for taxation purposes in Israel. Judge Magen Altuvia said in justifying his decision that, although the bribe was paid overseas and related to overseas activity, nevertheless, “the country’s values do not stop at its borders; if bribe payments are allowed as an expense, the Israeli tax paying public becomes a partner in these  foul acts.”

Details of the company and the country involved were not allowed to be published, in order not to endanger the people concerned.

The Tel Aviv District Court declared that even if a bribe is paid overseas, the country’s values do not stop at its borders.

According to the company, the Netanya tax inspector undertook to recognize 8-10% of the expenses as “special” expenses, even without supporting documentation, but eventually changed his mind.

“In allowing bribery expenses, a seal of approval is given to corrupt and corrupting conduct, to corrupt regimes that do damage to the world’s economic fabric, for example by harming fair competition and in other ways,” the judge said.

Altuvia added that bribery and recognition of bribery undermined the foundations of freedom and equality. “This allowance contradicts Israel’s obligation to be faithful to the United Nations charter,” he said.
