Nude Venus too sexy for London Underground
The London Underground, or ‘Tube’, as the Londoners like to call it, has refused to put up posters containing the image of a centuries old painting of Venus. The advertisement posters are intended to inform the travelers about the coming exhibition of German artist Lucas Cranach the Elder. That exhibition will be held in the famous Royal Academy museum in London.
The Venus is a classic painting by Cranach, dating back to around 1530. The refusal by the Underground is ” totally mad “, according to president on the Commission on Culture of the British Parliament, John Wittingdale.
A spokesman of the tube defended the underground’s prudishness :” Millions of people use the underground every day and they have no say in what advertising they see while traveling. The posters would violate the principle that men, women and children should not portrayed in a sexual way.”
How politically correct !
